Clinton accepts obamas secretary of state offer nytimes.com.

Dorothy, who lives across from where the Clintons live, is the sister of former U.S. Ambassador Thomas F. Dorsey Jr., who was one of the three senior officials who attended the meeting.

Mr. Clinton did not return an e-mail asking if his wife gave him an answer to the question.

Mr. Clinton had tried to downplay the meeting and described it as just a briefing with about a dozen other senior officials and other senior advisers.

As Mr. Clinton traveled to Philadelphia last week, his supporters quickly pointed out the controversy around the meeting, as did some Democrats who were in attendance.

In a statement on Monday evening, his campaign said that no one in the meeting was aware that Mrs. Clinton would accept the offer of secretary of state.

In fact, no person or entity that was aware of the request would have been permitted to act in any way before then. The request was made to Mr. Clinton as part of an effort to bring together key people around the country to discuss how to deal with international crises," said the statement. "He believed it was important to begin the process of reaching a consensus and discussed it in person with the national security team there, among others."

A White House official said that "the fact this was not the full complement of individuals who agreed to participate speaks to the strength of consensus there was."

At the time, Mr. Clinton, who has long promoted the issue as a way to boost foreign policy, was considering whether he should raise the issue with Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to campaign aides and advisers on both sides. His staff said he was already thinking about whether to go public with his decision when the announcement came.

The campaign had considered asking his cabinet colleagues, as well, about the topic. But that would have been too late: By last Wednesday, nearly two weeks later, Mr. Clinton had left his office at the White House and was on his way back to Washington.

That night, Ms. Maloney, speaking by phone from Philadelphia, said that Mrs. Clinton had offered her a few "conventional questions."

She told reporters during a press conference at the White House last Thursday that Mrs. Clinton has had "a number of conversations with a number of high-ranking officials, foreign policy people... and, I believe, a couple of ambassadors," according to a transcript obtained by the news media.

"In no way did we say she's a perfect candidate for the job," said Ms. Maloney, who said she declined to elaborate beyond the language used. "In no way, shape or form did she take on board what Barack Obama has proposed."
